The major goal of the book is to "advance the understanding of leisure and recreation behavior and offer a viable alternative to the conventional approaches to leisure and recreation" (p. vii). The alternative is to apply, for the first time in one volume, a social-psychological approach to the subjects of leisure and recreation.   Leisure is a key life domain and a core ingredient for overall well-being. Yet, within positive psychology, its definition and the psychological pathways by which it evokes happiness are elusive (Diener and Biswas-Diener ). In this paper, we seek to address these issues by delineating leisure and presenting a conceptual framework linking leisure to subjective well-being (SWB).

Leisure researchers often use objective measures of leisure (time, expenditures or activity participation frequency), although the construct validity of these measures appears questionable. In this study, a scale to measure subjective leisure is developed, and it is compared to the objective measures in terms of construct validity. Leisure is an attitude of the mind and a condition of the soul that fosters a 4/5(1).   Such positive outcomes of leisure activity involvement may be associated with successful aging. The body of leisure literature demonstrates the value of leisure activities for physical, psychological, and social health benefits (Mannell, ; Paganini-Hill, Kawas, & Corrada, ). The findings of this study are consistent with past leisure.
